Why Word-of-Mouth Advertising Is So Important to Your Success

If you have an e-commerce website and you're trying to generate traffic so that you can convert it to sales, one of the factors that you should take into consideration, is that word-of-mouth advertising is going to be one of your biggest sellers. Or, it could be one of your biggest killers, depending upon your products and your customer service. Why is word-of-mouth advertising so important on the Internet and especially for e-commerce?

First of all, there are lots of people spending money on a website that they have never visited before and they may be a little wary. In this day and age, scams are present everywhere and so people may be reluctant to trust the new website. This is especially true when your credit card or other personal information is at stake. That's where word-of-mouth advertising comes in. If potential customers have seen messages from other people talking about your excellent customer service, or their great purchasing experience on your site, new customers are no longer going to be concerned about spending money with you.

People trust what they hear other people talking about. These days, reviews can be gained illegitimately. Amazon is always removing reviews because they've been paid or traded for. Customers are aware of this. Consequently, some people have a hard time trusting reviews, unless there's enough of them. When someone reviews an eCommerce purchase that they've made that they were happy with, or perhaps even unhappy with, people are going to recognize that the review is probably legitimate. And therefore, the store they considering purchasing from is most likely legitimate.

Also, word-of-mouth is important because there are tons of people on social media sharing their experiences. Consequently, that's the number one way that the word is going to get out about your business, good or bad. It is also the number one potential way that your promotion or product or blog post is going to go viral. Although word-of-mouth generally refers to one person telling another in the real world, social media word-of-mouth means spreading the word to millions of people around the world. And that is HUGE for your business.

Finally, when someone shares their experience with your business with someone else, that customer is going to remember you. This is even more true than if they had purchased a product and didn't tell anyone. If they were pleased enough to tell their friends, they are going to remember you the next time when their ready to make another purchase. Additionally, that word-of-mouth advertising is going to stick in their mind as well as in the mind of the friend that they're telling it to.
